
SIUC Student Center Dining by Chartwells Supports Area Farmers to Encourage Fresh, Local Produce
Carbondale, Illinois – Student Center Dining by Chartwells is pleased to partner with and support Old Tyme Produce to promote local produce and create awareness of the many health benefits of eating well and buying local. Farms Student Center Dining partnered with include Lee/Theis Farms, Pin Oak Farms and Flamm Farms.
As part of their commitment towards sustainability, Student Center Dining by Chartwells will participate in an upcoming event “It Takes You – Eat Local” during the week of September 21 - 25, 2009. During this week Chartwell’s accounts across the nation will be encouraged to feature at least one or more locally grown produce items on their menus daily. Student Center Dining by Chartwells plans to serve over 25 cases of fresh, local produce. Customers will have access to locally grown produce such as apples, tomatoes, corn, peppers, yellow squash, zucchini, cabbage and eggplants. After the launch event, Student Cetner Dining by Chartwells will continue to offer local produce in an ongoing effort towards sustainability and wellness.
Student Center Dining by Chartwells is able to work closely with the farms, where local produce is grown exclusively for southern Illinois, in partnership with Old Tyme Produce, the produce distributor. To ensure food safety, all of Student Center Dining vendors undergo a rigorous quality assurance certification.
“Student Center Dining’s hope is that by supporting local farmers today, farms will continue to thrive in local communities tomorrow,” stated Matthew Kent, Dining Director.
Student Center Dining by Chartwell’s parent company, Compass Group North America, extended the September “It Takes You –Eat Local” campaign to other markets across the country as part of their overall pledge to encourage responsible and sustainable practices in their supply chain. The promotion will also educate customers about sustainability practices, the benefits of fresh, local produce and how buying local affects our communities and wellness.
