Student Center Open House 2008
As students begin fall semester at SIUC, Special Programs and Center Events (SPACE) is once again preparing for the Student Center Open House. This free, all day event complete with activities and food specials will take place on the Thursday, August 21st, from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm.
SPACE has been responsible for planning this event, formerly known as “First Thursday”, since the mid 1970’s as a way to welcome students to the Student Center. The day is filled with games, giveaways, and activities that are FREE to SIUC students, with the exception of the food specials.
One of the primary reasons students attend this event year after year is the giveaways and prizes. Students will have the chance to win prizes such as a Sharp 15” LCD TV, a CD Jukebox, gift cards, and much more by playing Scavenger Hunt Bingo from 11:00 am to 4:30pm.
Download the full schedule.
Last year the Student Center gave away over 2,500 prizes and freebies. 2008 will see more of the free giveaways including soda, T-shirts, McDonald’s and Bowling coupons, as well as everyone’s favorite refill cup. The lime green cup, which promotes Student Center services, can be refilled with soda for only 25 cents plus tax at both the Market Place and McDonald’s in the Student Center. By popular demand, this year’s cup refill life has been extended to include both fall AND spring semester!
Another of the day’s giveaways is the FREE ABS (“All By Students”) four subject notebook. This is the second year for this promotion at the Open House. The notebook cover was designed by Student Center Graphics Designer Nathan Bonner. Information pertaining to the various departments of Student Affairs is featured inside.
Some of the other activities include “Fortunes by Madame Bling” in the Big Muddy Room, “Buy One/Get One FREE” in Bowling, “Noon Tunes” in the Roman Room, “Crafts Galore” in the lower level Craft Shop featuring glass beads, wax hands, pottery and more. Stick around for New Student Programs’ “Making College Count” at 4:00 pm in the Ballrooms followed by the Registered Student Organizations (RSO) Fair in Ballroom D and the International Lounge from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. SPC Films will present a free showing of the film “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” in the Student Center Auditorium beginning at 7:00 pm.
Check out the newest addition to the Open House at the Apple Product Demonstration on the 2nd Floor Landing. The University Bookstore is now the SIUC Apple authorized campus store.
Take a break between classes to check out the various activities and don’t forget to stop by the tables on the second floor in front of the ID/Administrative office and pick up your FREE ABS notebook and 25 cent refill cup along with some of the other giveaways!
