STUDENT CENTER OPEN HOUSE 2007

As students begin fall semester at SIUC, Special Programs and Center Events (SPACE) is once again preparing for the Student Center Open House. This free all day event will take place on the Thursday, August 23rd, from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.

SPACE has been responsible for planning this event, formerly known as “First Thursday” as well as “E Night” and “Carnival of Craziness”, since the mid 1970’s as a way to welcome students to the Student Center. The best part of this fun filled day is that all of the games, giveaways, and activities are FREE to SIUC students with the exception of the $1 food specials.

One of the primary reasons students attend this event year after year is the giveaways and prizes. Students will have the chance to win prizes such as a mountain bike, Student Center gift cards, SIU apparel, and much more by playing Scavenger Hunt Bingo from 11 am to 3 pm and Saluki Bingo from 7 pm to 8:30 pm.

Last year the Student Center gave away over 3,500 prizes and freebies. This year, they will be handing out even more free stuff including soda, T-shirts, whoopee cushions, as well as everyone’s favorite refill cup. The cup, which promotes Student Center services, can be refilled with soda for only 25 cents at both Market Place and McDonald’s in the Student Center. By popular demand, this year’s cup refill life has been extended to include both fall AND spring semester….what a deal!

The giveaway of the day is the FREE Shadow five subject notebook that will premiere for the first time on the SIUC campus on Thursday at the Open House. The notebook cover was designed by Student Center Graphics Designer Nathan Bonner and has received national recognition. Information pertaining to the various departments of Student Affairs is featured inside.

Some of the other activities include free bowling and billiards, the Ivas John Band (blues) at the Noon Tunes in the Roman Room, crafts in the lower level Craft Shop featuring glass beads, wax hands, pottery and more. Don’t leave early because the biggest events begin at 5:00 pm. with the Registered Student Organization (RSO) fair in Ballroom D and the International Lounge and then at 7 pm when SPACE sponsors Saluki Bingo in Ballroom B. Also at 7 pm, SPC Films will present a free showing of the film “Blades of Glory”.

Take a break from between classes to check out the various activities beginning at 9 am and continuing throughout the day until 9 pm. Don’t forget to stop by the tables on the second floor landing in front of the ID office and pick up your FREE Shadow notebook and 25 cent refill cup!
